Nitrogen vs Air Compressor Fiber Laser Cutting

Nitrogen vs Air Compressor Fiber Laser Cutting

Nitrogen vs Air Compressor

We ran some side by side test of cutting 1/2" stainless steel with Nitrogen and an Air Compressor with our 12kw fiber laser. The visual results are in the photo.

Why Use a Compressor with Fiber Laser?

Many of our clients use an air compressor for laser cutting stainless steel and aluminum. Some insist on Nitrogen to keep the cut edge more clean.  The compressor leaves behind "oxidation" and can influence welding results negatively. However, air compressor is much more convenient to use. The ROI for compressor cost can be justified in just a few weeks, in high production environments.

What Are My Compressor Requirements?

  • CFM 100-125
  • Pressure 250-300 PSI
  • Compressor needs to deliver extremely dry air
  • Compressor needs to deliver extremely clean air through filtration

Where Do I Buy The Proper Compressor?

We recommend the best compressor for your specific laser (non obligatory). We add as option in your quote at a very good price. Get YOUR fast quote here: Official Fiber Laser Quote

Compressed Air Review:

Advantages:
  • Lower Cost: Compressed air systems are generally more affordable than dedicated nitrogen generation systems, leading to lower operating costs.
  • Speed: Compressed air can achieve similar cutting speeds to nitrogen in some applications.

Disadvantages:
  • Edge Quality: Compressed air may not provide the same level of edge quality as nitrogen, particularly on materials where a shiny, clean edge is desired, such as stainless steel.
  • Potential for Oxidation: If the air isn't properly filtered, it can contain oxygen, which can cause oxidation and discoloration of the cut edge.
